Review:
Captain Phillips as the title suggests is a true story about
Captain Richard Phillips played by Tom Hanks, whose cargo ship is hijacked by a
group of Somali pirates and held for ransom. Directed by Paul Greengrass the
director of the second and third Bourne movies it is a thrill ride all the way
through to the end. The pirate crew consist of four members with Muse (Barkhad
Abdi) donning the lead role in the hijacking. We’re given a brief back story
about the pirates and they’re essentially extremely poor fishermen living in
the coastal lines of Somalia and have no other source of income and are hired
by warlords in Somalia or overseas.
Tom Hanks puts in an amazingly gripping and captivating
performance as we have all come to expect from him over the years. The main villain,
the leader of the pirate group Muse is played by Barkhad Abdi and he puts in a
stellar effort and you wouldn't be able to tell that it’s his debut movie, as
is the case with all the other three pirate actors. It’s one of the best movie
of 2013 and certainly a must watch. It’s gripping, thrilling and downright
terrifying throughout. The fact that it’s based on real events makes it feel
even more real as you will start humanizing with Captain Phillips's predicament.
I give it 4/5 stars
