Review:
Before starting off, this review comes from someone who
hasn't read the books nor followed the franchise keenly. The movie dives
straight into the story and starts off in the immediate aftermath of the first
movie. It takes place in a backdrop of resistance and uprising against the
government in which katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is the symbol of hope
after her heroics in the previous hunger games. It has more of a adult tone
throughout in order to enhance the seriousness of the situation. President Snow
blackmails Katniss with her family's safety in order to get her side with him,
show public solidarity towards the governor and suppress the resistance. After
a while when that doesn't prove particularly successful President Snow starts
another Hunger Games although this time the competitors all being past
champions. Rest of the storyline moves into spoiler territory and whether
Katniss escapes the Hunger Games alive again and what happens to the resistance
forms the cusp of the movie.
The love triangle between Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) still persists though I personally couldn't care about that aspect of the storyline. Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen puts in a spirited and captivating performance. Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne doesn't have much to do in the movie and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark does a surprisingly good job as well. Donald Sutherland as President Snow puts in a menacing act as the calm and calculated evil villain. The movie is pretty decent but if you’re already a fan of the franchise you will love it, there is a twist at the end which isn’t hard to predict but still it should be enough to have you hooked till the end.
I give it 3/5 stars.
